“There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes”, says the proverb. In order to make the right choices in front of the wardrobe, it would help if you check the weather report on the radio or TV, or even better, at your own weather station. When a thermometer, barometer and hygrometer are combined, this is called a weather station.
The barometer measures the air pressure in Hecto-Pascals (hPa). The air pressure corresponds to the weight of the surrounding layers of air and it depends on the weather conditions and the altitude. At higher altitudes, the air pressure is lower; starting from the sea level, it decreases by 1 hPa every 8 meters. Therefore, a barometer must always be adjusted to a local altitude before its first use.
Without the correct adjustment, it will not work!
The barometer must first be set to your local altitude before its first use. Find out about the current relative air pressure of your local area (values from the weather office, Internet). With a small screwdriver, carefully turn the adjusting screw clockwise until the reference needle matches the value given by your sources. Avoid over winding! You achieve greater accuracy by slightly tapping and adjusting.

Most of our classic weather stations with analogue mode of operation are manufactured in-house, at our TFA factory in Wertheim. A so-called aneroid barometer measures the air pressure. The accuracy of the TFA’s patented Domatic movement is +/- 3 HPa. The current air pressure is marked with a reference pointer in order to be able to read the changes at a later time, as the needle moves position when there is a change in air pressure. For barometric pressure measurement, it doesn’t matter if the barometer is located indoors or outdoors.
The thermometer measures the temperature in degrees Celsius and/or in Fahrenheit. TFA uses bimetallic thermometers in its weather stations and a pointer indicates temperature. Only the classic, curved Sheraton models incorporate capillary thermometers.
The hygrometer measures the percentage of moisture in the air. This value is “relative” because the air can absorb different amounts of moisture depending on the temperature.
This instrument was invented in the 18thcentury by the Swiss physicist Horace Bénédict de Saussure. He took advantage of the property of human hair: if the humidity increases, the hair expands and contracts again when the air is dry. Blond hair was considered to be particularly ideal because it is very thin. At the heart of the TFA-patented and particularly precise synthetic-hair hygrometer is a synthetic hair. In bimetallic hygrometer models, the hair is replaced with a coated bimetallic spring.
Nota bene: In order to make sure the readings in your analogue hygrometer are still reliable, we recommend to regenerate or even to readjust (recalibrate) your instrument every six months. This simple maintenance will keep your hygrometer in top form.
If your weather station is suitable for outdoor use, choose a shady, sheltered location. Avoid direct sunlight for an accurate measuring of the outside temperature.
The observation of the humidity in the open air gives you clues about the development in the weather condition. More often than not, an increase brings worse weather with it, while with a decrease in humidity you can expect a better weather.
Whether we feel well and comfortable at home depends to a great extent on the quality of the indoor air. Too humid indoor air (> 65%) promotes the formation of mould. But an overly dry indoor climate can be damaging to your health, especially the skin and the respiratory system.
If you use your weather station inside the house and regulate the temperature and humidity by targeted heating and ventilation, you will create a pleasant and healthy living environment and can even save heating costs.
Digital weather stations measure air pressure, temperature and humidity with electronic sensors. Radio transmitters placed outdoors determine external values. A transmitter for the outside temperature is a standard integral part of wireless weather stations.
The weather forecast is displayed using a symbol. Whether the sun, clouds or raindrops are shown, the device calculations are based on the barometric pressure changes that the integrated electronic barometer measures. Depending on the model, the air pressure values are also displayed and the trend can be observed on a bar chart.
Weather stations with colour display are becoming increasingly popular and technically advanced. See the indoor or outdoor climate values in your favourite colour. Depending on the weather station, up to 600 colours rich in contrast can be selected.
