Sustainability is a topic that has become increasingly important in recent years. It is about conserving resources, protecting the environment and promoting the sustainable development of the global community. This entails not only ecological, but also social and economic aspects.
In 1987, the United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development defined sustainability as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.
We, at TFA Dostmann, are also committed to sustainable and responsible corporate governance in order to counteract the challenges of climate change and environmental degradation and to create a liveable future for all.
We take responsibility – Our sustainable commitment
As a family business with almost sixty years of tradition in a rural environment, our ecological, economic and social commitment is particularly close to our hearts. Therefore, we go beyond legal requirements on a voluntary basis to practically implement sustainability in our company.
This includes sticking with our production site in Wertheim, an employee-friendly corporate culture, long-term and fair partnerships with our suppliers and a continuous reduction of our ecological footprint, for example by installing a photovoltaic system.
Ecological commitment at TFA
In addition to using renewable energy sources, the company has set itself the goal of avoiding waste and pollutants and conserving resources in production.
TFA has long been committed to raising customer awareness of ecological issues. This includes offering more sustainable products. Saving thermal energy through temperature control and, thereby, a more conscious use of resources is also an important concern for us.
Renewable energies at TFA Dostmann
By using renewable energies, we want to contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions. Therefore, the roofs of the production and parts of the office building have a photovoltaic system. This enables us to cover about 40% of the electricity consumption at our site in Reicholzheim. As a new project, the logistics centre at Reinhardshof will also have a PV system in the future.
TFA Dostmann also sets a positive example when it comes to heating our production and office buildings. We rely on the constant temperature of groundwater as a renewable energy source with the help of a water-to-water heat pump. This allows us to heat and cool our company efficiently.
Avoiding waste and pollutants
Since 2017, we have been reducing our plastic packaging and switching to paper packaging material. TFA packaging should be designed to be as inexpensive, material-saving and recycling-friendly as possible.
An example we are very proud of: With the CLOCK-IN-THE-BOX wall clock, we have managed to pack a 400mm diameter wall clock into a 120mm wide box in a space-saving way.
When selecting our suppliers, we not only pay attention to price, but also to compliance with ecological standards and the avoidance of toxic and harmful substances. In this way, we contribute to the promotion of a liveable environment.
Sustainable products from TFA
TFA is increasingly focusing on products in its portfolio that take various sustainability aspects into account. These include the use of recycled materials, the energy efficiency of the products, durability and the possibility of repair and recycling.
Made in Germany
The majority of our analogue measuring instruments are manufactured directly at our site in Reicholzheim. This creates jobs in our region and helps reduce CO2 emissions by shortening transport routes to our customers. When selecting our raw materials, we focus on short delivery routes and regional suppliers.
This graphic shows the “Made in Germany” concept in the manufacturing process of the TFA Dostmann energy-saving thermometer. It emphasises sustainability and transparency in the production chain through cooperation with regional suppliers. Every detail of the thermometer is carefully selected and supplied by reliable partners to ensure the highest quality.
Products to save energy
Through our range of thermometers, thermo-hygrometers and weather stations for monitoring the indoor climate, we also want to help our customers save energy – because the most climate-friendly electricity is the electricity we don’t use in the first place. Every degree less room temperature saves up to six percent of heating energy. Our energy-saving thermometer 12.1055 with concrete energy-saving tips on the back is particularly suitable for this.
Durable products and recycled materials
Mechanical thermometers, hygrometers and barometers from TFA are extremely durable and can provide good service for decades. Electronic devices usually have a shorter service life than analogue devices and the possibilities for repair are limited. Our customer service department can often help with tips on operation, professional repairs or spare parts and, thereby, extend the life of our products even further.
Battery-free devices
Of course, our analogue measuring devices work without batteries or other energy sources. In addition, we offer battery-free electronic products. Our BatteryCheck battery tester uses the energy of the battery to be tested for this short-term measurement.
Our ECO STEP digital bathroom scales do not need a battery either. These scales generate enough energy for the entire weighing process at the touch of a button.
Rechargeable products
Rechargeable products are playing an increasingly important role in our range. A rechargeable battery avoids the use of disposable batteries and saves important raw materials. Ideally, the battery is recharged using green electricity. One of these products is, for example, the BOXX2 digital radio alarm clock with indoor climate.
With solar-assisted products, solar energy is used, for example, for lighting or to achieve a longer battery life. One example is the AVENUE PLUS digital garden thermometer.
Energy-efficient appliances
TFA is increasingly focusing on energy-saving devices. Some of our wall clock models can reliably display the exact time for up to 3 years using an AA battery.
Our social responsibility
Social responsibility is not only about legal compliance, but also about ethical principles, such as fairness, equality and respect. We have a responsibility towards our employees, customers, suppliers and the environment. A social responsibility means, for example, ensuring fair pay and working conditions, creating an appreciative and impartial working environment and advocating equal opportunities as well as the integration of minorities.
Compliance with human rights and social standards is also particularly important to us when selecting our suppliers.
This is how we contribute to a liveable future
A liveable future requires the commitment of every individual. Everyone can contribute to creating a sustainable future through conscious decisions and practices. This is not only about environmental protection, but also about social aspects, such as equal opportunities, respect and solidarity. For example, we can reduce our energy and resource consumption, pay attention to environmentally-friendly products and stand up for social justice.
